What Can a Kitchen Respray Really Achieve? From Failing Laminate to a High-Quality Spray Finish
This professional kitchen respray in Derbyshire transformed a 10–15-year-old dark brown kitchen into a lighter, pale grey finish without replacing the existing units. When Elite Spray Tech discovered failing laminate during preparation, the laminate was removed before the doors were sanded, primed and professionally spray finished. New handles completed the transformation, while the existing layout, worktops, appliances and flooring were retained. The project involved approximately 4–5 days of workshop work and 3–4 days on site.
Kitchen Respray Lifespan
See How Failing Laminate Doors Were Repaired, Resprayed and Given a New Finish Without Replacing the Kitchen
By the time the homeowners contacted us about their kitchen in Derbyshire, the rest of the house had already been updated.
The kitchen was next.
It was around 10 to 15 years old, with dark brown wooden doors and laminated sections.
The room still worked for the homeowners, but the finish was starting to look tired and out of step with the rest of the property.
They had already fitted new worktops and wanted to bring the cabinets up to the same standard without replacing the whole kitchen.
Once we began preparing the doors at our workshop, however, we discovered that the laminate was starting to fail.
For this project, we were able to remove the failing laminate, prepare the doors underneath and give the kitchen the new finish the homeowners wanted.
| Kitchen age | Approximately 10–15 years old |

Respraying Peeling Laminate Kitchen Doors
Removing the Failing Laminate Created a Sound Base for the New Finish, With Doors Prepared in the Workshop and Units Sprayed On Site
At first, the main issue seemed to be the dark colour and tired finish.
However, once the doors were back at our workshop and preparation began, we found that the laminate was starting to lift.
Spraying straight over it was not an option.
Even if the new finish looked good initially, unstable laminate underneath could continue lifting and cause problems later.
We stripped the laminate and failing adhesive from the doors before sanding and preparing the surfaces underneath.
Additional coats of primer were then applied and sanded smooth, creating a stable base for the new spray finish.
Removing the laminate added more preparation to the job, but it meant we could work from a sound surface rather than risk problems developing underneath the new coating.
We also filled the existing handle holes and created new fixing positions for the replacement handles.
Once the doors had been professionally spray finished, they were cured and checked for imperfections before being returned to the property.
The fixed sections of the kitchen were prepared and sprayed on site.
We protected the walls and ceilings, laid Correx across the flooring and sanded, primed and sprayed the visible surfaces of the kitchen units.
The on-site work took around three to four days, while the doors took approximately four to five days in the workshop.
Choosing a Kitchen Cabinet Respray Colour
Compare Colour Samples to Find a Lighter Finish That Works With the Existing Worktops and Flooring
The homeowners already had a few colours in mind, but they wanted to see how different options would work in their kitchen before making a final decision.
We provided a Farrow & Ball colour chart and prepared several colour samples for them to compare.
They took a couple of days to look through the options before deciding on the final shade.
The colour they chose took the kitchen in a much lighter direction, creating a noticeable contrast with the original dark brown finish.
The pale grey cabinetry works well with the existing light worktops and grey flooring, bringing the different parts of the room together without changing the layout.
The new handles also helped update the overall appearance, complementing the lighter finish.
Kitchen Respray Before and After
A Pale Grey Finish and Updated Handles Gave the Dark Brown Kitchen a Completely Different Look
The difference between the original dark brown kitchen and the finished pale grey cabinetry was significant.
Against the light worktops and grey flooring, the cabinets looked much lighter and less dominant in the room.
The layout, island and worktops did not change. The transformation came from the new colour, professional spray finish and updated handles.
For the homeowners, that meant they could keep the parts of their kitchen that still worked well, including the existing cupboards, storage, appliances and newly fitted worktops.
The finished kitchen also felt much more in keeping with the improvements they had already made elsewhere in the property.
The homeowners were very happy with the result. They left us a five-star review and said they would recommend Elite Spray Tech to others.
Can Laminate Kitchen Doors Be Resprayed Instead of Replaced?
The Condition of the Laminate and the Door Underneath Determines Whether Respraying Is Suitable
Laminated kitchen doors can often be resprayed, but their condition makes a difference to the preparation required.
If the laminate is firmly attached and the surface is sound, it may be possible to prepare it for spraying.
If the laminate is lifting, bubbling or beginning to peel, spraying straight over it risks leaving an unstable surface underneath the new finish.
That does not necessarily mean the doors need replacing.
On this project, we were able to remove the failing laminate, prepare the material underneath and achieve the finish the homeowners wanted using their existing doors.
However, not every door will be suitable for the same treatment.
The condition of the underlying material also needs to be assessed before deciding whether respraying is the right option.
This is why proper inspection and preparation matter.
With more than 25 years of experience, we assess each kitchen according to the condition of its existing surfaces rather than treating every respray as exactly the same job.
